Refer a Horse

If you know a Thoroughbred whose racing days are ending — a horse that needs a dignified retirement or help finding its next home — we want to hear from you.

Who is a good fit for The Final Turn?

We accept referrals from trainers, owners, veterinarians, and aftercare partners. Our program is built for horses that need professional care, time, and a responsible next step.

Permanent Retirement
Horses whose racing days are done and who need a safe, dignified home for the rest of their lives.
Letting Down From the Track
Sound horses retiring from racing who need time and a quieter routine before retraining or placement.
Next-Home Placement
Horses whose owners need help identifying and arranging an appropriate, documented next home or program.
⚠️
What we are not
The Final Turn is a retirement and aftercare program, not a medical layup or rehabilitation facility. Horses needing active injury treatment should be referred to a veterinary clinic first — we're glad to talk about what comes after.

Before you refer

📋 Capacity is limited

We operate a 10-stall program. Space availability varies. Submitting a referral form does not guarantee placement.

🩺 Veterinary information is required

We need to understand a horse's current health status before accepting them into the program. Vet contact information is required for all medical cases.

✍️ Owner consent is required

We can only accept a horse with the owner's or legal agent's written consent. A care agreement must be completed prior to arrival.

🏇 Jockey Club ownership must transfer

Any Jockey Club–registered Thoroughbred we accept must have ownership transferred to The Final Turn on its Jockey Club record. The transfer has to be completed as part of intake — we cannot take a horse into our care while it remains registered to a previous owner.

💰 Funding must be identified

The Final Turn is a nonprofit — not a free-care program. Most horses are supported through a combination of owner contributions, sponsorships, and program fundraising. We discuss this during intake.

Suggested entry donation: $1,000

To help a horse settle in, we suggest a $1,000 entry donation covering its first month of care. This isn't a requirement and won't disqualify a referral — every situation is different, and we discuss funding with you during intake.

We review all intake requests and respond within 2 business days. Submission does not guarantee placement. A care agreement and veterinary records are required before any horse arrives at The Final Turn. Jockey Club–registered horses must also have ownership transferred to The Final Turn in The Jockey Club’s records.

Urgent Welfare Situation?

If you're dealing with a horse welfare emergency, please contact us directly rather than waiting for a form response. We'll do our best to respond promptly, though capacity constraints may limit our ability to assist in every situation.
